Job Description

The School of Information Science (iSchool) at the University of South Carolina (UofSC) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 16, 2023.

Successful candidates will be expected to expand on one or more of the following areas in Data Science:

  • Applied Data and Text Mining
  • Applied AI and Machine Learning (ML)Critical Data Studies
  • User Experience, Information Architecture
  • Web and Mobile Application Development
  • Social Network Analysis
  • Cybersecurity

Job Duties

  • Participate in instruction, research, publication, grant writing, and other scholarly activities.
  • Teach and develop courses in both face-to-face and online environments at undergraduate (BS in Information Science) and graduate students.
  • Candidates may be tasked with teaching and/or developing courses related to some of the following topics: web and mobile application development, programming languages (e.g., R, JavaScript, and Python), database management systems (e.g., MS Access and SQL, NoSQL), and data/text mining, user experience.
  • Mentor students for independent studies and doctoral dissertations.
  • Provide service to the department, college, university, profession, and community.


An earned doctorate in Information Science or a related field is required by the start date of employment, but strong applicants who can convincingly demonstrate that they will complete the degree timely (e.g., by documenting a scheduled defense) will also be considered.

We are able to consider applications at the early Assistant Professor stage for these positions.

Position requires a clearly articulated research agenda, and enthusiasm for and excellence in teaching in multiple delivery formats.
