Job Description

This position offers growth opportunities for an early-career academic professional with an interest in research on issues related to libraries and workforce diversity.Building upon documented prior training and experience in research methods, research design, and research project management, the resident fellow will gain valuable experience as part of a research team. The resident fellow will support Hunter Library’s commitment to and participation in national efforts to understand and address barriers to increased racial and ethnic diversity within the library workforce. Experiences and expertise gained through this position will allow the fellow to strengthen research skills, solidify research interests, and explore options for a career path after the residency.

The resident will enrich Hunter Library by bringing in new ideas and perspectives, contributing to projects and strategic priorities, and helping to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion within the library. The resident fellow also will have the option to serve on the library-wide DEI Committee and on campus committees and groups that promote DEI across the university. The majority of the first year of the fellowship will be spent working on an existing externally-funded research project.

The resident fellow will be given an opportunity during the second year to continue working on the same project, or to design and execute their own research project that aligns with the purpose of the fellowship. This position will report to the Dean of Library Services initially, but may be reassigned later to another supervisor depending upon the resident fellow’s interests and the library’s needs. The fellow will be provided additional support for professional development, at a level commensurate with what is provided to Hunter Library faculty librarians. Appropriate mentoring will be provided, depending upon the interests and career aspirations of the fellow.

This is a 12-months per year fixed-term faculty position at the rank of instructor. Initial appointment period is anticipated to be a two year period. Any appointment beyond the initial term will be at the discretion of WCU campus leadership in accordance with existing Academic Affairs guidelines/policies.

Anticipated salary is $60,000-$62,000.

Experience/Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills

Accredited Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in Library Science, Information Studies, or another social-scientific field.

Less than five years of professional experience working in libraries.

A combination of formal training and experiences that demonstrate familiarity and skills in research methods, research design, and conducting research.

Demonstrated prior experience working with diverse racial and ethnic populations.
