The field of LIS has expanded past that of the shushing public librarian. With technological changes as well as the field of information science expanding across different sectors, a broad range of career tracks in LIS have emerged – across practice, industry and academic pathways.

How can we navigate or understand broader levels of impacts afforded by our library and information science backgrounds and training? What are the considerations across the different tracks, and how should we develop or think about impact within each track?
In this webinar, hear from leading LIS scholars and leaders who will share their experiences, perspectives and advice for anyone who may be considering expanding their work and deepening their impacts in different ways.

Presenter Bios:

Andrew Dillon is a Professor of the School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin. He has been an active researcher of the human response to information technology for the last 20 years, graduating from the National University of Ireland (M.A. first class) and Loughborough University of Technology. Defying professional categorization, he has held appointments in departments or schools of cognitive science, computer science, psychology, instructional systems technology, management information systems, library and information science, and informatics. Having published more than 100 articles and books on various aspects of information behavior and design, Andrew serves or has served on the editorial boards of many leading journals such as the International Journal of Human-Computer Studies and the Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology. He advocates a view of information science as a means of accelerating discovery and shaping a more democratic world.

Lisa Hussey is Associate Professor at the School of Library and Information Science at Simmons University. She was formerly the director of library services at DeVry University in Arizona, and has taught at the University of British Columbia and the University of Missouri, where she received her doctoral degree. She also served as program manager for the University of Arizona School of Information Resources and Library Science. Professor Hussey has given several presentations on diversity in librarianship and what motivates minorities to choose a library science career. Her publications include articles on DEI in LIS, advocacy for public libraries, and mentoring and professional identity in LIS. Additionally, she is the co-editor of Library Management 101: A Practical Guide, 2nd ed. and authored or co-authored nine of the chapters.

Siobhan Stevenson is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Information, University of Toronto. Before receiving her PhD in LIS in 2005 from the Faculty of Information and Media Studies at Western University (London, Ontario), she worked for over twenty years in the public library sector. In her final professional position, she contributed to the development of province-wide strategic plans on behalf of Ontario Canada’s 260 public library boards. Her research interests include labor conditions in public libraries and educating for public librarianship. Her most recent projects include: a focus on frontline worker health and safety, and exploring the hybridization of librarianship with social work, community development, and informatics. Some of her work appears in Library Quarterly, Public Library Quarterly, Journal of Documentation and The Information Society. She teaches courses in management, public libraries, community asset building, and critical infrastructures.
