Presenter Bios

Dr. Africa Hands is a lecturer at San Jose State University. Her research focuses on LIS student motivation, faculty support from the lens of self-determination theory, and library services to college-bound patrons and underserved communities. She is the author of Successfully Serving the College Bound (ALA Editions, 2015), a book inspired by her experiences in higher education and public libraries. Africa is active in the Association for Library Service to Children, serving on the board of directors.

 





Dr. Shelly Buchanan loved teaching middle and high school English in California, Hawaii, and Oregon. She moved into work as a School Librarian and Instructional Coach where she discovered her love of researching with students and teachers. Later, Shelly earned her Ph.D. in Information Technology and now lectures full time at San Jose State University School of Information. Her research interests include inquiry learning, student motivation, instructional design, student-centered learning, information literacy, and children and teen library instruction and services.

 

Presentation Description: 

In this webinar, participants will be introduced to self-determination theory, a leading theory on human motivation, and its application to the LIS classroom environment. Participants will learn specific instructional strategies that support student motivation and engagement for deeper more meaningful learning.
