When working in virtual teams at any level within an organization, a team leader (Director, Chair, Faculty member) may face some challenges specific to conflict and culture. Developing and leading virtual teams relates to the departmental/school vision, understand of culture, conflict competence, supporting peer leadership, and setting priorities. All of these relate to aspects discussed at the 2020 ALISE Leadership Academy.

Given our current online environment due to COVID, this is an opportune time to discuss the aspects of virtual teams. Specifically looking at where cultures can vary widely in their approaches with peers working in various locations, communication challenges, etc. This also relates to the establishment of team norms in a virtual environment and considering how leaders recognize the value of conflict & cultural competence.

Presenter Bio

Michele Villagran

Dr. Michele Villagran is an assistant professor with San José State University School of Information where her research focuses on cultural diversity and social justice in library and information science and cultural intelligence phenomena. Dr. Villagran is also the founder of CulturalCo LLC, which provides consulting services in conflict management, bias, emotional intelligence, cultural intelligence, diversity, and inclusion.
