Presentation Description:

The webinar will highlight three ALISE Community conn@CT Mini-Grant funded projects involving libraries, LIS educators, and local communities. Joseph Winberry, Noah Lenstra, Michele Villagran and Ana Ndumu will discuss lessons learned and challenges confronted while partnering with and empowering local communities. Prospective grantees will also learn tips for organizing, proposing, and managing Community conn@CT Mini-Grant projects.

Presenter Bios

Joseph WinberryJoseph Winberry is a Ph.D. student at the University of Tennessee’s College of Communication and Information. His research in community informatics, information practices, and social justice explores how people use information and technology to produce social change. Winberry’s scholarship has been published in The International Journal of Information, Diversity, and Inclusion, The Journal of Librarianship and Information Science, and The Library Quarterly (forthcoming), among other venues.   Noah Lenstra

Dr. Noah Lenstra, MLIS, is an assistant professor of library and information science at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In June 2020, his book Healthy Living at the Library was published by Libraries Unlimited. He serves on the Partnerships Committee of the Association for Rural and Small Libraries. He is the Primary Investigator on the IMLS (RE-246336-OLS-20) project HEAL (Healthy Eating and Active Living) at the Library via Co-Developed Programming.

 

Michele Villagran

Dr. Michele Villagran has over 25 years of experience in the public and private sectors. She is an assistant professor with San José State University School of Information where her research focuses on cultural diversity and social justice in library and information science and cultural intelligence phenomena. Dr. Villagran is also the founder of CulturalCo, which provides consulting services in conflict management, bias, emotional intelligence, cultural intelligence, diversity, and inclusion. She is an advanced certified cultural intelligence and unconscious bias facilitator through the Cultural Intelligence Center.

 
 

Ana NdmuDr. Ana Ndumu (Ph.D., Florida State University) is an assistant professor at the University of Maryland College Park’s College of Information Studies. She researches library services to immigrants, immigrant information behavior, and Black diasporic identity in LIS. Her work has culminated in the IMLS-funded Counted In Project aimed at increasing census participation among immigrants, a Toolkit for Library Services to Black Immigrants, and two forthcoming edited books: Borders & belonging: Critical examinations of library approaches toward immigrants (Library Juice Press, 2021) and Black Librarians in America: Reflections, Resistance, Reawakening (Rowman and Littlefield, 2021).
