Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Information Studies or related field with a demonstrated record of excellence in and continued promise for high-quality research, teaching, and professional development. In addition, applicants must have a demonstrated record of and commitment to the mentorship of students and faculty from underrepresented and underserved populations. Job DutiesThe successful candidate should have expertise that allows them to instruct in our core information studies curricula spanning undergraduate and graduate courses, and be dedicated to promoting, advancing, and participating in active mentoring activities and programs that provide research and professional development opportunities for our diverse student body.
SE&IS is one of the top-ranked schools in the U.S., a founding member of the iSchools organization, and home to internationally recognized scholars who address significant issues in the field such as information as evidence, knowledge infrastructures, data studies, digital cultures, and critical internet inquiry. With close collaboration between the Department of Information Studies and the Department of Education as well as with many other departments and centers on campus, there are tremendous opportunities to develop interdisciplinary collaborations and research.
Within the school, the Department of Information Studies is an innovative, interdisciplinary locus for theory and research in information studies in a landscape that includes archival and media archival studies, cultural preservation, data science and curatorship, information ethics and policy, library studies, museum informatics, new media and Internet studies, and textual and visual studies, among other areas. The Department’s faculty is among the most productive and highly-cited in the Information Studies field and across many others; they maintain close ties with the Digital Humanities program, the Chicano Studies Research Center, the Digital Library Program, the Ethnomusicology Archive, the Film & Television Archive, the Institute for Digital Research and Education, the Law School Promise Institute for Human Rights, and Library Special Collections, among other units. The Department also has strong connections to a wide range of libraries, archives, museums, community organizations, media and technology industry sites, and National Parks that serve both as internship and fieldwork sites for students and as collaborators in research and educational activities. The Department offers the Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree with specializations in archival studies, informatics, data and internet studies, library studies, media archival studies, and rare books / print and visual culture. The Department also offers the Ph.D. in Information Studies and a growing undergraduate program. The standard teaching appointment in the Department is four courses per year (or their equivalent) in accordance with the Department’s workload policy. Other duties include graduate student advising and mentoring; active engagement in research, scholarship, and/or creative work; active participation in administrative and governance responsibilities for the Department, the School, and the University; and alumni and community relations.
