Job Description

The University of Alabama School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) seeks a student-focused faculty member for a full-time, non-tenure-track renewable contract (NTRC) assistant professor to begin August 16, 2022.

Job Duties

  • Teaching four graduate courses per semester with the option to teach during the summer. Instructional modes include web-based synchronous distance education and face-to-face. Typically, at least three courses will be taught in the online mode each semester. The fourth course will be offered in a modality that meets LIS programmatic needs.
  • Teaching LIS core course in the areas of: information science, information and community, and professional LIS paths. Option to teach in other areas of the LIS curriculum and to develop new courses to meet LIS programmatic needs.
  • Advising graduate students (master’s and doctoral).
  • Participating in professional service and engagement to SLIS, the College of Communication and Information Sciences, the University of Alabama, and local/regional/national professional associations.

Experience/Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Earned doctorate in Library and Information Science or cognate area from a regionally accredited university prior to the appointment date.
  • Experience teaching diverse populations and a commitment to working with nontraditional students
  • At least 3 years of teaching experience in the topical areas covered by the MLIS core: information science, information and community, and/or professional LIS pathways
  • Evidence of successful synchronous teaching of online courses
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching two or more of the areas covered by the MLIS core
  • Evidence of successful course development for online delivery
  • Demonstrated academic advising and student mentorship experiences
  • Experience teaching online courses in one or more of the identified MLIS areas ofemphasis
  • Evidence of prior undergraduate teaching experience
  • Documented excellence in teaching at the graduate level
  • Active involvement in LIS professional associations.
