Job Description

The Department of Information Science at the University of North Texas (UNT) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Information Science with a focus on academic librarianship or public librarianship and library science to begin in Spring 2026. We are seeking excellent candidates with interests relating to our program specialization areas such as:

  • Library Administration: Including supervision of librarians and librarian professional development.
  • Information Organization: Including library cataloging, classification, digital repository metadata, and information retrieval in library contexts.
  • Specialized Library or Information Center Services: Including special collections/academic archives, music librarianship, art librarianship, and science librarianship.
  • Information Behavior and Libraries: Including reference services and instructional librarianship.
  • Archives, Museums, and Cultural Heritage Organizations: Including archival or museum outreach; appraisal, arrangement, description, and preservation of collections; and digital collection management.
  • Collection Management: Including contracting, budgeting, and vendor relations.

Job Duties

The candidate is expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate (master’s and doctoral) level courses, recruit students, build partnerships with communities through regular outreach activities, maintain an active research agenda, produce research publications, seek external funding, and provide service in an academic position in library and information sciences. The candidate must demonstrate a record of research accomplishments and have the ability to design and deliver courses in a variety of formats, including online and hybrid modalities. The candidate is expected to work with doctoral students and to lead and serve on dissertation committees.

This is a nine-month, full-time, tenure-track position. We seek a candidate who will provide inspiration and is motivated to be a leader in research and teaching, who can leverage the strengths of the department’s dynamic faculty and programs, and who will build collaborative relationships in the University and profession.

Experience/Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills

Minimum Qualifications

1. an earned doctorate in library science, information science, education or other related fields at the time of appointment, and
2. experience working in and/or collaborating with libraries, archives, or museums, and
3. evidence of effective teaching or contribution to instruction, research, and scholarship with experience/expertise in the broad area of academic or public librarianship, or archives, or museums.

Preferred Qualifications

1. a master’s degree (accredited by the American Library Association, ALA) or experience as faculty in a department that offers ALA accredited master’s degrees (e.g., M.L.S., M.I.S., M.L.I.S., M.S.-L.S.); , and/or
2. an excellent track record of research and publications with potential for funded scholarly research in library and information science, and/or
3. involvement in library and information science professional associations or societies.
