Job Description

Teaching responsibilities for this nine-month appointment include topics primarily in programming and services in libraries and other information environments. This could include, but is not limited to, programming, working with underserved populations, maker spaces, STEAM programming, reader’s advisory, story times.

Candidates who have experience with health information/health librarianship are especially encouraged to apply.

Job Duties

This faculty appointment is part of the online library science master’s degree program housed within the SIS. Candidates will be expected to teach a 2-2 course load, primarily at the graduate level in the library science program, with opportunities to teach across the School’s programs.

This position will have an expected distribution of effort of 50% research, 45% teaching, and 5% service.

Faculty are expected to teach, advise students, maintain a personal research program, participate in professional activities, and serve on university committees. Opportunities exist to work with doctoral students in the College’s interdisciplinary Ph.D. program..


Experience/Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills

Candidates are expected to hold an earned Ph.D. or be in ABD status in library science, information science, or a related field at the time of the interview.

The Ph.D. is required by August 2022, for the successful candidate to hold the rank of assistant professor and begin the probationary period toward tenure.

About the School:

The School of Information Science at UK offers two online master’s degrees, one in library science and a second in information communication technology, an undergraduate major in information communication technology (including an online degree completion component), and an online minor in information studies. Additionally, the SIS includes the Instructional Communication and Research group, which teaches UK core courses in multi-modal communication to incoming students. The library science program, and specifically the program in health information, are both recognized nationally.

About the College:

The College of Communication and Information is composed of two schools (The School of Journalism and Media, School of Information Science), two departments (Department of Communication, Department of Integrated Strategic Communication) and an interdisciplinary graduate program. Nearly 1,700 undergraduate majors and more than 400 graduate students are led by more than 80 full-time faculty, who also teach in the university’s core curriculum and serve students perusing minors and certificates in the College. The College also houses UK’s independent student newspaper, The Kentucky Kernel, and the defending national championship Intercollegiate Debate Team.
