Job Description

The University of Wisconsin-Madison's Information School seeks highly qualified candidates for up to two tenured positions in information sciences. These faculty positions will be academic nine-month, tenure-track appointments at the Associate Professor level, to start August 2024. Applications at the Professor level may be considered in exceptional cases.

Applications are specifically encouraged in, but not limited to, the following areas:

  • Natural language processing and information retrieval, e.g.: applied natural language processing; text analysis; text and multimedia retrieval; recommendation systems; conversational systems;
  • Computational social sciences, e.g.: analytics and modeling of political behavior; computational analysis of social networks; algorithms and social media analytics; social simulation of organizational behavior.
  • Policy analysis or policy-making studies of information or data security/risk/assurance, privacy, data governance or data management.
  • ML/Al, computation, and the future of work
  • Computational and information technologies in relation to children and/or elderly populations.
The successful candidate will contribute to an inclusive, fair, and equitable environment that fosters engagement and a sense of belonging for faculty, staff, students and members of the broader community. The Information School is a partner in the School of Computer, Data & Information Sciences at UW-Madison. Candidates with interdisciplinary projects and/or a willingness to work across boundaries with academic partners in computer science, statistics, communications, bioinformatics and other units are encouraged.

Job Duties

Faculty responsibilities include research and publication, teaching, student advising (both master's and PhD), and service. The teaching load is two courses per semester. The candidate is expected to conduct scholarly research resulting in publications in high-quality peer-reviewed scholarly venues, acquire external funding to support research and graduate students, develop and teach bachelor's and master's level courses (both online and in person), and conduct doctoral seminars. The candidate will be committed to service within the department, university, and profession appropriate to faculty rank. The successful candidate, as a member of the College of Letters & Science, will proactively contribute to, support, and advance the college's commitment to diversity among all aspects of their teaching, research, and service.




  • PhD, Information Science or a related, position-relevant field by start of appointment
  • Demonstrated outstanding research record
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching
  • Appointment at the tenured level requires evidence of excellence in scholarly research, teaching, and service. It also requires demonstrated, ongoing success (appropriate to research area) in securing extramural funding from federal funders (e.g., NSF, NIH, IMLS), foundations, and/or industry research partners.
  • Appointment at the tenured level also requires review by the Tenure Committee at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The successful candidate will demonstrate experience with fostering or the ability to foster an inclusive and equity-centered teaching, learning, departmental, and research environment where all can thrive.
