6.3-Research SIG

Title: "Community Collaboration and Research: Engaging Communities to Enhance Learning, Research, and Practice in Archival Education”

Mini-abstract: Papers in this panel will report on various ongoing research projects that focus on community engagement and collaboration in Archival Science. Challenges and opportunities that arise from community-research collaborations—for example, developing culturally sensitive and responsive curriculum; pedagogy; and researcher/community-member relationships—and their implications for enhancing archival education and practice will be discussed.

Content: Kelvin White will start by providing a brief introduction of the panel and its speakers. He will be followed by Anne Gilliland who will report on the outcomes of two research symposia that included community members from various ethnic communities and efforts being made to develop culturally relevant archival education programs. Kelvin White will then report on an ongoing case study that examines how absences from the official records and recordkeeping come into being in Mexico and the role that education of archival professionals and Afro-Mexican community members might play in addressing or contributing to these absences. Ulia Gosart’s presentation will focus on collaborative efforts by Indigenous communities in Russia and the United Nation’s Department of Public Information to include Indigenous communities in the process of learning and knowledge production at local and international levels. Ricardo Punzalan will then discuss some of the lessons learned from organizing a former leprosarium’s archives, their implications on archival education, and how they might help understand the role archives in segregated communities. Lastly, Kelvin White, the convener, will close by providing all participants with the opportunity to ask questions and engage in open dialogue.

Title:Celebrating the Joy of Youth Services: A Baker’s Dozen of Research Excerpts

In his introduction to Chelton & Cool’s Youth Information-Seeking Behavior II (Scarecrow, 2007), Anthony Bernier asserts that in LIS research youth are nearly always portrayed as lacking and deficient and argues that we need to recover the joy associated with this work. This session is inspired by this statement and Pat Hutchins’ picture book And the Doorbell Rang (Scholastic, 1988).
