Thomas Malone Patrick J. McGovern Professor of Management
For two decades, Thomas Malone has been a visionary proponent of new organizational designs that take maximum advantage of information technology's expanding possibilities. He is the author of The Future of Work, a landmark exploration of the company of the future.
Tom also is the founding director of MIT's Center for Collective Intelligence (CCI), formed in 2006 to study how new communication technologies—especially the Internet—now allow huge numbers of people all over the globe to work together in new ways.
Thomas Malone is Patrick J. McGovern Professor of Information Systems at MIT's Sloan School of Management. He was the founding director of MIT's Initiative on Inventing the Organizations of the 21st Century and of the MIT Center for Coordination Science.
He has co-founded three software companies and was a former research scientist at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. An inventor with two patents, Professor Malone has published over fifty articles, research papers and book chapters. He is co-editor of Inventing the Organizations of the 21st Century.
2010 Presentation
Dr. Malone's book The Future of Work provides the first credible model for actually designing the company of the future. He argues that a more decentralized, “coordinate and cultivate” approach to organizational design will reap the scale and knowledge efficiencies of large organizations while enabling the freedom, flexibility, and human values that drive smaller firms. Going beyond issues of architecture, Tom defines the skills managers will need in a workplace in which everyone shares the power to decide.
