Job Description

The College of Information at the University of Maryland, College Park (INFO), invites applications for a full-time, professional track lecturer with interests in computer networks, physical computing and rapid prototyping. The successful candidate will teach hands-on, experiential learning courses focused on providing supportive technical experiences to students with minimal computing experience. The successful candidate will inspire and empower students to understand the powerful abstractions provided by networked computer systems as well as explore low-cost, sustainable, and energy-conscious computing methods, emphasizing hands-on learning, creativity, and the social implications of technology. Teaching will emphasize project-based learning aimed at cultivating a Maker-oriented or Do-It-Yourself mindset by fostering student creativity and supporting development of practical skills in computer networking, physical computing and rapid prototyping.

We are a multidisciplinary community of over 70 full time faculty and 80 doctoral students. Many members of our faculty hold joint or affiliate appointments with other campus units, including Anthropology, Business, Criminology, Education, Engineering, English, Geographical Sciences, Journalism, Survey Methodology, Public Health, the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities (MITH), and the Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS). Our College enrolls over 2,500 diverse students in nine degree programs: Bachelor of Science in Information Science, which is the university’s second largest major; Bachelor of Science in Social Data Science; Bachelor of Arts in Technology and Information Design; Master of Library and Information Science; Master of Information Management; Master of Science in Human Computer Interaction; Master of Professional Studies in Game, Entertainment, and Media Analytics; Master of Professional Studies in Data Journalism; and Ph.D. in Information Studies. These programs are offered in the classroom at College Park and Shady Grove campuses, online, and in blended formats.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will teach a variety of hands-on, laboratory courses to novices and relative beginners. Topics may include, among others: introductory networking and Internet of Things (IoT); cloud computing for information science; hands-on ethical hacking; robotics for educators, and technology design. These courses include discussion of both technical and sociotechnical issues.

The successful candidate will teach three courses per semester (fall and spring), engage with external stakeholders, participate in shared governance within the university, and participate actively in the life of the college.

Experience/Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills

The successful candidate will have teaching interests in one or more of the following areas:

  • Computer networking at the level of Cisco Networking Academy courses
  • Physical computing and Internet of Thing (IoT) systems
  • Hands-on prototyping techniques and tools (e.g. 3D printing, laser cutting, microcontrollers); Makerspace, minimal computing, energy-conscious, and/or DIY movements within the computing space; Computing supporting gaming and eSports
  • Innovative applications and societal impacts of related technologies.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Masters degree in information science, computer science, computer engineering, STEM education, or related areas
  • Interest or experience in teaching or mentoring to increase diversity and inclusion in information studies and related fields
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in the areas described above or related areas
  • Prior teaching, training, or mentoring experience in practical computer networking, hands-on rapid prototyping, and development laboratory courses
  • Experience teaching with accessible tools and technologies, such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Scratch, Micro:bit, Tinkercad, Maker platforms and kits
  • Experience designing, overseeing, and/or teaching in technology laboratories such as practical computer network labs and Makerspaces
  • Professional experience related to the college’s academic programs.
