Job Description

The College of Information at the University of Maryland, College Park (INFO), invites applications for a full-time, professional track lecturer with expertise and interests in information design and visual communication. The successful candidate will possess a blend of technical, creative, and pedagogical skills, with a focus on advancing design theory and practice at the intersection of people, information, and technology.

The successful candidate will have teaching interests in one or more of the following areas:

  • Design for information and communication: UX, Product, Visual, Graphic Design Interpreting complex data for visual presentation
  • Creative interaction and novel interface design
  • Creating visualizations based on investigative analyses of data Interactive, immersive, and digital media production
  • Multimedia storytelling and/or multimodal narrative presentations
  • Innovative applications and societal impacts of emerging technologies

While these areas of expertise and courses are of particular interest, candidates with expertise and interest in any related areas to information design and visual communication are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will teach a variety of courses. Topics may include among others: user-centered design; information design and organization; visual design, data visualization, and visual analytics; creative coding; and ethics in design practices.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will teach three courses per semester (fall and spring), engage with external stakeholders, participate in shared governance within the university, and participate actively in the life of the college.

Experience/Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in design, digital arts, communications, human-computer interaction, information science, or related areas
  • Interest or experience in teaching or mentoring to increase diversity and inclusion in information studies and related fields
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Terminal degree in the areas described above
  • Prior teaching, training, or mentoring experience
  • Industry or consulting experience in information and communication design, data visualization, visual design, emerging technologies, or a related area
  • Professional experience related to the college’s academic programs
