Library Director (CDIS Commons Director) Department/CollegeSchool of Computer, Data and Information Sciences (CDIS) DatesOpening Date: 04/26/2024 Job DescriptionThe School of Computer, Data and Information Sciences (CDIS) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks a dynamic professional to join our growing team as the CDIS Commons Director.The CDIS Commons will be a user- and learner-oriented set of services, spaces and people that serves several thousand students and several hundred faculty and staff from across four growing academic departments in the new CDIS Building. The Commons Director will provide direction, vision, oversight and assessment of the spaces, programs, and services that comprise the CDIS Commons. The Commons Director will oversee a range of services including Commons space management and assessment, reference and information services, outreach, student service points, support for student clubs, library instruction and a circulating collection. Collaboration with the CDIS Learning Center, campus libraries, and student services will be a critical component of this position. The Commons Director will manage a team of professional, graduate and undergraduate student hourly staff. The Commons will also provide training opportunities for information professionals, positioning student staff members in impactful roles within Commons operations. As the inaugural director of the CDIS Commons, the successful candidate will lead the Commons in providing innovative directions in teaching, learning, and research support. The candidate for the position will have a developed understanding of academic libraries and student ecosystems. Collaboration will be a critical component of this position. The Commons Director will closely collaborate with the Learning Center Director, heads of CDIS departments and units, and CDIS faculty and staff to oversee Commons operations across multiple floors and service areas. This position or other Commons staff serve as the subject liaison for library and information studies and information sciences. This position will also collaborate with campus partners, including campus library leadership, to advance excellence in research and education. Job DutiesDirects or serves as a member of library senior leadership, overseeing a portfolio which may contain one or more libraries or units. Leads or participates in the strategic planning and implementation of policies, procedures, and major initiatives. Directs decisions which have a long-term and measurable impact on operations and solves problems which are complex, strategic, and multi-faceted. 30% Provides vision and direction for collections, services, technology, operations, and space management; 5% Directs or assists in strategic planning and the establishment of long-range research and instructional goals; 5% Leads major initiatives and organizational change efforts. Manages and prioritizes goals which fulfill the mission of the library; 10% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees; 5% Represents library interests on committees and events relevant to the strategic direction of the library; 10% Leads teams dealing with complex issues that have multiple touchpoints and stakeholders; 5% Develops and manages complex budgets. Allocates resources with substantial discretion, balancing multiple priorities; 5% Cultivates and maintains relationships with school and campus leadership, donors, collectors, and professional colleagues; 5% Ensures compliance with accreditation standards and reporting obligations; 5% Oversight and assessment of shared space in collaboration with governance groups; 5% Oversee coordination of student organization support; 10% Support student experience through non-credit library instruction and through experiential learning and student employment opportunities in the Commons setting. Supplemental InformationWork Type: Full Time: 100% It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Appointment Type, Duration: Ongoing/Renewable Salary: Minimum $86,000 ANNUAL (12 months) Depending on Qualifications. The typical starting salary for this position is $86,000 - $121,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
