Job Description

The Old Dominion University Darden College of Education is inviting applications for the tenure track position of Assistant Professor of Library Science. Start date for the position is either January or August 2018. The College seeks scholars interested in expanding ODU’s successful school library program into a more diversified library and information studies program.

To carry out our mission, we seek a candidate able to build on the program’s current strengths and enhance its national reputation and commitment to innovative scholarship, teaching, and discovery in the library and information fields.

Job Duties

Responsibilities include (1) producing high quality research for publication in top-ranked journals; (2) teaching and developing graduate level, distance-education courses in librarianship and information studies; (3) seeking external funding opportunities to support scholarly activities; (4) advising and directing graduate and doctoral student coursework and research; and (5) participating in initiatives directed toward program growth and development.

Experience/Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills

Required Qualifications are: (1) an earned doctorate in library/information studies or related field by December 31, 2017, for January starting date, or August 31, 2018, for August starting date; (2) strong potential or history of research and scholarly activities; and (3) demonstrated ability to teach core library and information studies coursework outside of the school library specialization.

Preferred Qualifications are: (1) an MLS/MLIS from an ALA accredited program; (2) a record of service and leadership in the library profession; (3) a demonstrated commitment to diversity and the ability to work collaboratively; (4) experience with effective and innovative online, asynchronous instruction; (5) a record of peer-reviewed publications and/or external grant experience; and (6) interest and experience in research and teaching in new and emerging areas of library and information studies.
