This workshop will explore various biases present in AI algorithms and interfaces used on online platforms such as digital archives, libraries, social media, search engines, and other AI-powered services. It will encourage critical thinking about the credibility of information, the transparency of curation processes, the accuracy of representations, and the complexities surrounding information authority, formats, and editorial supervision. Participants will also be taught effective strategies for recognizing and evaluating these biases inherent in each media.

Presented By: Seul Lee, UCLA Department of Information Studies
Seul Lee is a doctoral candidate in Information Studies at University of California, Los Angeles, holding a B.A. in Management Information Systems, an M.A. in Data Science, and a graduate certificate in Digital Humanities. Her research interests involve investigating the intricate landscape of information biases, algorithmic subjectivities, and the pivotal role of digital literacy education in fostering a nuanced and comprehensive understanding of biases behind the presentation of online information. Her recent work in the field of digital literacy education focuses on evaluating the credibility of information in AI-generated content like ChatGPT to identify and address potential biases and errors that may occur during the process. Her dissertation focuses on user-generated content, examining the factors that lead to biases and mis/disinformation, and their impact on information behaviors. She is involved in projects funded by the UCLA Initiative for the Study of Hate (ISH) that aim to address online hate speech by working with middle and high school students in the US.
